May 17th 2008 Susan G Koman Race for the Cure

As many other people, I have been touched by breast cancer in several ways. In January of this year, I had an aunt die of it. I’ve had two other aunts survive and recently found out another has it. Also, a good friend also has become a survivor.

So, the Race for the Cure is a big deal to me. One day, I hope to run the 5K. For now, I participate and this year I raised $550 to donate.

May 17th was the date for the race here in Columbus Ohio. Here are some pictures I took:

The beginning of the crowd

The crowd was over 40,000 people that morning and everyone was in a great mood. We had been having horrible, gloomy weather for days and this morning was just gorgeous. Cooler, but sunny.

Still the tip of the iceburg

The camera person is too short to take aerial shots

The sign says it all

Izzy

A lot of people had brought their dogs to the walk and to the run. This one’s name was Izzy and she was just as sweet as sweet could be. I really wanted to take her home.

Just a neat shot I thought

The circus is in town!

Hee, I thought this was cool. The circus was in town and for once it wasn’t at my house or involved my family!

Chinese Dragons!

This was the first year that I can remember that they had bands and other entertainment alongside the race. I kept getting terrible shots of the bands (hey it’s hard to focus when you’re walking fast!), but I stopped traffic when I saw these guys. I was tickled pink (pardon the pun) when I saw them and giggled with joy.

House

This is just one of the houses that we passed during the walk. There were lots of people out waving and shouting encouragement from houses, lawns, balconies and windows.

This is why I walk

This is the reason why I walk. This is the reason why I care. This is the reason why I donate to help stamp out this disease.
